The Etiology of Vulnerability Exploitation

Michael Roytman, Chief Data Scientist, Kenna Security
Jay Jacobs, Data Scientist, Cyentia Institute
March 8, 2019 from 11:10AM - 12:00PM

Etiology is the study of causation, and the presenters wanted to understand why some vulnerabilities are exploited but many aren’t. Curiosity led them on a journey through tens of thousands of vulnerabilities, CVSS scores, CVE, NVD, scraping mailing lists, collecting data feeds and ultimately ended up with a few dozen data points that helped them understand the probability of a vulnerability being exploited.

Applied Prediction: Using Forecasts To Get Proactive About Security

Ed Bellis, CTO, Founder, Kenna Security
Wade Baker, Partner & Co-Founder, Cyentia Institute
March 6, 2019 from 1:40PM - 2:00PM

We can predict the weather, yet we still don’t have foresight into the cyber-attacks heading our way. Understanding metadata about your organization, industry, and threat models can help you know if your company is a target versus a target of opportunity. Ed Bellis and Wade Baker detail the practical application of new predictive models and incorporating forecasting into your security programs.
